Teen charged as adult in Erie armed robbery

Police accuse 16-year-old of taking man’s van at gunpoint early Saturday morning.

Erie police charge that a 16-year-old city boy used a loaded handgun to rob a man of his minivan during a confrontation in an eastside neighborhood early Saturday morning.

Maurice L. Kimbro was charged by police as an adult in the robbery. He remained in the Erie County Prison on $150,000 bond Sunday afternoon following his arraignment by Erie 2nd Ward District Judge Paul Urbaniak Saturday morning on charges including felony counts of robbery of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, possession of a firearm by a minor and carrying a firearm without a license.

Police charged Kimbro under the Fisher Bill, a state law that permits juveniles accused of committing violent crime to be charged as adults.

Police accuse Kimbro of confronting a man in the area of East 24th and Perry streets on Saturday at about 12:25 a.m. and forcing the victim to drive him in the victim’s van before Kimbro drove off in the van when the victim escaped.

The 26-year-old victim told police that he had dropped his mother off and was waiting for her to get into her house when an unknown black male wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants entered the gold Dodge Caravan, showed a gun and ordered the victim to drive. The victim said he started fighting with the suspect before the victim fled from the van in the 2300 block of Wallace Street and ran to a friend’s house to call the police, investigators said Sunday.

The keys were in the van and the vehicle was running when the victim ran off, police said. Officers who went to the area where the victim had last seen the van did not find the vehicle but found evidence of a vehicle leaving the roadway, driving across a lawn and hitting some signs, according to investigators.

Later Saturday morning, officers spotted the van in the 700 block of East 25th Street and witnessed the driver, who matched the description of the suspect, get out of the van and walk toward a house. Officers stopped the suspect, whom they identified as Kimbro, and took him into custody without incident. A loaded 9 mm handgun was found in the front left pocket of his jacket, investigators said.
